Auschwitz architectural plans uncovered

Nov. 8, 2008

The German newspaper Bild published never-before-seen architectural plans of the Auschwitz extermination camp on Saturday that reveal, in their unequivocally marked sections, that everyone involved in the operation of Auschwitz knew full well that it was intended for the systematic extermination of human beings, the paper said.

The floor plans, cross-sections and maps on yellowing paper, mostly on a scale of 1:100, were reportedly found during the evacuation of an abandoned Berlin apartment. They were drawn up between 1941 and 1943.

The 28 documents include detailed blueprints of prisoner barracks, gas chambers marked clearly Gaskammer (Gas chamber) in a Gothic-inspired font and a cross-section of the gate into which the rails of trains entered carrying Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, disabled persons and other people the National Socialists sent to die.

One of the maps carries the handwritten signature of Gestapo commander Heinrich Himmler.

The plans were not construction plans but were drawn after Auschwitz-Birkenau was built (on the foundations of an old military base from the Austro-Hungarian Empire).

On January 20, 1942, Nazi officials met in the resort of Wannsee east of Berlin where they devised the Final Solution, and this has traditionally been taken by historians as the beginning of the Nazis' extermination campaign.

One of the drawings, predating the Wannsee Conference by eight months, sheds new light on the chronology of the German genocide machine.

Dr. Hans-Dieter Kreikamp, chief director of the Bundesarchivs, the federal archives in Berlin, said the find was of "extraordinary importance."

"The plans are authentic certificates of a systematically planned genocide of European Jews," Bild quoted Kreikamp as saying.

As the plans show a "Laundry and shower room" leading into a "Dressing room" and then to the "Gas chamber," there could be no doubt of the purpose of the large room marked Gaskammer.

The documents rebut the last of those who would deny the Holocaust, Bild said in its report.

Blueprints for Auschwitz camp found in Germany

Sat Nov 8, 2008 10:12am EST

By Erik Kirschbaum

BERLIN (Reuters) - The original construction plans believed used for a major expansion of the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz in 1941 have been found in a Berlin flat, Germany's Bild newspaper reported on Saturday.

The daily printed three architect's drawings on yellowing paper from the batch of 28 pages of blueprints it obtained. One has an 11.66 meter by 11.20 meter room marked "Gaskammer" (gas chamber) that was part of a "delousing facility."

No one from the federal government's archives was immediately available for comment on the authenticity or importance of the documents.

The plans, published ahead of the 70th anniversary of the "Kristallnacht" or the Nazi pogrom that was a harbinger of the Holocaust, also include a crematorium and a "L. Keller" -- an abbreviation for "Leichenkeller" or corpse cellar.

A drawing of the building for Auschwitz's main gate was also found in the documents that Bild said were believed to have been discovered when a Berlin flat was cleaned out.

The mass-circulation newspaper quoted Hans-Dieter Kreikamp, head of the federal archives office in Berlin, as saying the blueprints offered "authentic evidence of the systematically planned genocide of European Jews."

There were mass killings of about one million Jews before the Nazi's "Final Solution" was formulated in late 1941. The decision to kill Europe's 11 million Jews was made at the Wannsee Conference in January 1942.

A copy of the minutes, known as the "Wannsee Protocol," is one of the most important documents from the war.

The newly found Auschwitz blueprints are dated October 23 1941 and could offer historians earlier evidence of Nazi plans to kill Jews on a mass scale, Bild said.

"These documents reveal that everyone who had even anything remotely to do with the planning and construction of the concentration camp must have know that people were to be gassed to death in assembly-line fashion," Bild wrote.

"The documents refute once and for all claims by those who deny the Holocaust even took place," it added.

The concentration camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland was the largest -- at least 1.1 million Jews were killed there.

Auschwitz I was set up in May 1940 in an old Polish army barracks. The first victims were gassed in September 1941. Auschwitz II, or Birkenau, opened in October 1941. Four large gas chambers were added to the camp in January 1942.

Auschwitz documents not new, experts say

November 9, 2008

Auschwitz documents touted as a sensational find by a German newspaper have been known to historians for years, an expert told JTA.

Historian Robert Jan van Pelt, an expert on Auschwitz, said he had checked the "so-called ‚€˜new‚€™ material" on the Web site of Bild, a high-circulation daily, and found that "the drawings that are on their site are all old material, perfectly known" and published by himself and others in the 1990s.

"If they are original drawings from which blueprints were made, this would be an interesting story," van Pelt, a professor at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, told JTA in a telephone interview. But, he said, there were "tons of such drawings in 300 boxes at Auschwitz ... copies of the originals." Some were found in the former Soviet Union in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and published by van Pelt and others.

The Bild obtained the drawings of the Auschwitz layout, including gas chambers, and published several images in its Nov. 8 edition marking the 70th anniversary of the Kristallnacht pogrom. The newspaper said the 28 yellowing documents, drawn by a concentration camp prisoner and dated 1941-43, were discovered in a Berlin apartment that was being cleared out.

Hans-Dieter Kreilkam, the director of the German Federal Archive, told reporters he thought the material was new and that it provided additional proof of the chronology of the so-called "Final Solution." Kreilkam did not rule out the possibility that the person who found the documents sold them to the newspaper.

Van Pelt expressed dismay that the Bild‚€™s claim of a new discovery had been picked up by newspapers around the world.

"Everyone is repeating the same nonsense, and the deniers are having great fun because it shows how people are gullible," he told JTA.

Sven Felix Kellerhoff of Bild‚€™s sister paper Die Welt told JTA that he knows experts were aware of the plans.

‚€œBut for the people, especially for the readers of Bild, these plans are absolutely new,‚€ he said, adding that it is also newsworthy that the original plans are now in Germany.

One possibly unique aspect of the documents is that SS chief Heinrich Himmler, who oversaw the Nazi extermination program, appears to have marked his initials on one of the pages, in green ink.

"If these were the initials of Himmler, that would be very interesting," van Pelt agreed. But "it is completely and utterly incomprehensible" that the director of the national archive would "open his mouth on something so sensitive without having consulted the literature." And when the Bild publishes this "without doing any homework, it puts us back 20 years. It‚€™s as if we didn‚€™t publish these documents already."

Historian Andreas Nachama, the director of the Topography of Terror memorial in Berlin, told JTA it is well known that prisoners were forced to create architectural drawings and also to construct concentration camp buildings themselves under SS guard.

Auschwitz expert: Blueprints found in Berlin not of death camp

A leading expert on Auschwitz on Sunday denigrated the importance of the finding of plans for the construction of the extermination camp, which was reported this weekend in the German tabloid Bild. He said the documents have been known to scholars for many years and that they were not plans to build the extermination camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau, but rather earlier plans for the building of a forced labor camp.

Prof. Robert Jan van Pelt, a internationally acknowledged expert on the planning and construction of Auschwitz, said that based on what he had seen on the Internet, there seemed to be nothing new about the documents. He was one of several scholars who expressed doubts about the significance of the Bild story.

Van Pelt, an architectural historian, said that copies of the plans of the stages of the camp's construction were also in the archive of the Polish National Museum at Auschwitz and in an archive in Moscow. He said that the source of the new copies was unclear since, according to Bild, the plans were found in an apartment in Berlin, whereas copies that were in the SS offices in Berlin were destroyed by Allied bombing in 1944.

Van Pelt said he also doubted the authenticity of the signature of the SS chief, Heinrich Himmler, since such a high-ranking officer would not have signed such plans, and none of the copies he had ever seen bore such a signature.

Van Pelt also said the words "gas chamber" on one of the drawings meant a room in which disinfection of clothing was done by means of gas, and that the sketch is not of an extermination camp established in 1942, but rather of earlier plans for a huge concentration camp in which a force of 130,000 slave laborers was intended to work.

Van Pelt suggested the plans might be fakes, motivated by the lucrative market in Nazi memorabilia and documents.

Ralf Georg Reuth, the historian who wrote the piece in Bild, told Haaretz yesterday that the existence of such plans in Russian archives was known, "but German institutions have no originals, and therefore the importance of the finding of such original material is very great." Reuth would not elaborate on where and when the plans were discovered, or whether they had been submitted to experts for study.

Another hackneyed Auschwitz "revelation"!

The latest issue of the German mass-circulation daily Bild announces the recent discovery of new documents on Auschwitz, writing, in particular, that one of them seems to prove the existence of a homicidal gas chamber in that camp. In Berlin , Hans-Dieter Kreikamp, head of the Federal Archives, thinks that in this "discovery" he has found the way to silence the revisionists.

In reality, there is strictly nothing new about this type of document, and the building plans of the "gas chamber" in question (Gaskammer, fully spelt out) are those of a simple "delousing facility" (Entlausungsanlage, fully spelt out as well).

Besides, a passage in the Bild article demonstrates the unease of our fraudsters. Here it is in German, followed by an English translation: "Dass in der 11,66 mal 11,20 Meter gro√Ÿen "Gaskammer" nicht Kleidungsst√ľcke mit dem bei der SS √ľblichen Blaus√§ure-Mittel entlaust, sondern Menschen vergast werden sollten, muss als sehr wahrscheinlich angenommen werden." "It must be considered very likely that in this 11.66 by 11.20-meter 'gas chamber' it was not garments that were deloused in the SS's usual way with hydrogen cyanide, but that it was human beings who must have been gassed."

The reader will have noted: "It must be considered very likely [.] that it was human beings who must have been gassed."

This passage was left out of the articles in the French or English-language press which have, so far, come to my attention and which claim to quote Bild.

I shall permit here myself to remind readers that I was the first in the world to publish the building plans for the Auschwitz crematoria supposed to have housed homicidal gas chambers; the spaces in question were actually either morgues, an air-raid shelter, or some other innocuous rooms. I discovered those drawings in 1976 in the camp archives and began publishing them with an article in the Spanish magazine Interviu (February 1979), a piece carrying a photo of me holding a sheet with crematorium plans altogether comparable to the ones now shown in Bild.

In the nearly thirty years since then, I have never ceased going over the conclusions to be drawn from those plans and from a number of other elements, like the inspection of the purported crime scenes at Auschwitz, or, on the one hand, the scientific bibliography regarding delousing, disinfection or anti-infestation methods using Zyklon B and, on the other hand, the procedure for executing a condemned prisoner with hydrogen cyanide gas as followed in certain American penitentiaries. (Invented shortly after the first world war and still in use today under another name, "Cyanosil", Zyklon B is a hydrogen cyanide-based substance). From then onwards, nearly all the revisionist researchers (Fred Leuchter, Germar Rudolf, Carlo Mattogno and many others) have made extensive use of those plans or of others still, which Bild discovers today just as someone might discover the moon or the Loch Ness monster. Indeed the anti-revisionists have also, at their end, had to publish these plans and then attempt, though in vain, to challenge the obvious significance thereof.

Such was precisely the case with the French pharmacist Jean-Claude Pressac. I'll recall that he, after having deployed the formidable means put at his disposal by the Klarsfeld couple to uphold "the Holocaust" argument in general and that of the alleged homicidal Auschwitz gas chambers in particular, wound up writing that, all things considered, those arguments were fit only "for the rubbish bins of history" (Valérie Igounet, Histoire du négationnisme en France, Paris, Gallimard, 2000, p. 652).

In the end, the Bild reporter has done nothing but recycle an old rumour.

It remains to be seen whether the Jewish authorities find fault with his clumsiness or, instead, congratulate him for being so willing to help with their propaganda.

(6) Israel to end public funding & support for illegal Jewish settlement outposts in West Bank

Israel to end support of outposts
By Tim Franks BBC News, Jerusalem

The Israeli government has announced that it will cut off all public funding and support for illegal Jewish settlement outposts in the West Bank.

Ministers said the move was in response to an "intolerable" rise in violence and threats from some settlers directed towards the Israeli security forces.

The settlement outposts are regarded as illegal under Israeli law.

The US-brokered "roadmap" peace plan demands Israel uproot all unauthorised outposts built since March 2001.

About 450,000 Jews live in the West Bank and East Jerusalem in settlements considered illegal under international law, although Israel disputes this.

Israeli ministers have long complained about the behaviour of a minority of settlers, particularly those who live in outposts. Now, they say, they will take action.

The government will stop money and amenities from the public purse going to outposts.

"There is a not insignificant group of outlaws that are behaving in a manner that is threatening the rule of law," caretaker Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said ahead of Sunday's cabinet meeting.

"This is an intolerable situation that we refuse to accept."

Under international law, all Israeli settlements on occupied territory are regarded as illegal, except by Israel itself.

However, even Israel says that the 100 or so smaller, unauthorised settlements - known as outposts - break the country's own law.

Recently, there has been an increase in violence around outposts, as the Israeli army and police have attempted to evict a few of the settlers living on some of the newer and smaller outposts.

The head of the internal intelligence service, Shin Bet, said it was "very concerned" by the danger of Jewish extremists reverting to political assassinations.

The government's declaration that it is going to get serious with outposts may raise eyebrows in some quarters.

Almost four years ago, a government-commissioned report detailed how a large number of outposts had been established with official collusion.

Mr Olmert has described them as a "disgrace". And yet not one significant outpost has been dismantled or shut down by his government.

(7) New Zealand election results

From: Iskandar Masih <> Date: 10.11.2008 06:02 AM

Results of General Election 8 November 2008

* National has gained 45.4% of party vote against Labour's 33.8% and is in a clear position to form a government with smaller support parties.

* NZ First gained only 4.3% party vote, failing to make it over 5% threshold, and also has failed to take any electorate seats, therefore fails to return to Parliament.

Rt Hon Winston Peters and NZ First have suffered 'bad press' in recent months over allegations involving political donations - however no allegation has resulted in any criminal prosecution and the only sanction has been the Parliamentary censure against Rt Hon Winston Peters himself following inquiry by the Privileges Committee;

But still NZF gained larger share of party vote than indicated in polling - likely due to support from elderly and others;

No one has faulted the excellent job and results achieved by Rt Hon Winston Peters as FM over past 3 years;

* Green party gained less than indicated in polls - but still returned to Parliament with two extra MPs (8 - was only 6). Co-Leader Fitzsimons indicated that Green Party will work with National on specific issues of concern, but had indicated prior to election that its preference was to support Labour.

* ACT party returned to Parliament with 5 MPs having gained increased party vote support - perhaps by those intending them to be a support party for National. MPs brought into Parliament include Sir Roger Douglas, who was previously Finance Minister in 1984 - 87 Labour government and introduced a free market liberal revolution.

* Maori party returned to Parliament with an extra MP (5, was only 4) and now an important support partner for National. Though Maori party in awkward position since most of their voters gave party vote to Labour, though electorate vote to Maori party candidates. - but National needs to form a broad coalition and build alliances from the beginning to be able to stay in government beyond one term. Also Maori needs to support National government to ensure political stability and also to be able to contribute to solutions and support for Maori people, especially during the current economic downturn and recession conditions.

* Labour lost several MPs, including some Cabinet ministers - in Auckland, Rotorua, Hamilton, New Plymouth, West Coast - Tasman and Te Tai Tonga - returned with only 43 MPs (previously 49) - including 22 list MPs.

Leader Helen Clark announced that she will resign as party leader, having failed to lead the party to victory in election. Labour will select new leader by end of December - expected to be Phil Goff.

* National has gained several new electorate MPs in Auckland, Hamilton, Rotorua, Taupo, New Plymouth and West Coast ‚€“ Tasman: 41 electorate MPs and 18 list MPs.

*John Key - a younger generation of PM - a multi-millionaire former Merrill Lynch currency trader who has dreamed of becoming PM since a school student.

His campaign message was that NZ can do better - slogan 'choose a brighter future' -
also turned around Clark's campaign slogan 'It's about trust' - by thanking NZers for the trust they have placed in him.

- aims to make NZ safer, more prosperous, more ambitious
- we have the ability to make our lives better
- we will rise to the challenges of the recession and world financial crisis
- we need unity of purpose, to all work together for our collective success
- emphasizes food production, our landscapes and scenery and kiwi ingenuity
- with hard work we can make NZ as prosperous as we know it can be
- the National - led government will serve all NZers - and support those that can't support themselves

* it is likely that Shadow Cabinet Foreign Affairs spokesman Murray McCully will be appointed as Foreign Minister.

Key has said that he will take tourism portfolio himself.

Labour Deputy Leader Michael Cullen has also announced that he will resign as Deputy Leader.
